S.L. Leonard & Associates recently announced that it will be the executive project managers for the new Life Sciences Research and Nursing Education Building at the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. The firm will be overseeing the design and construction of the building.
"We are looking forward to completing a facility that will advance the mission of the university, which is preparing health care professionals to work in underserved communities," said Sean L. Leonard, founder and president of S.L. Leonard & Associates.
The Life Sciences Research and Nursing Education Building will be a two-story, 63,000 square feet facility. It will occupy 81,000 square feet on the university's 11-acre campus, and will be located alongside the university's main administration building.
A newly furnished scientific research facility will be housed inside the new building, providing state-of-the-art space for laboratories, clinical research, and support functions for the College of Medicine, the College of Science and Health, and the new School of Nursing. Preliminary cost estimates indicate a projected total cost of about $40 million. The new building will also provide an area for current and new research programs.
The Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science is a minority-serving medical and health science institution chartered in 1966. Its mission is to help society's poorest communities. The university, which serves as the only academic health sciences center for the area's 1.5 million people, is the only designated minority-serving health sciences university in a county of more than 10 million people, 70 percent of whom are from minority communities. In its 35-plus years of enrolling students, the university has made enormous contributions to health care in the nation by graduating more than 400 physicians, 2000 physician assistants, 2500 physician specialists, and numerous other health professionals - almost all from diverse communities who have gone on to serve underserved communities.
